Evening prior to departure:
On some dates with no other expedition immediately prior, the vessel
is available for complimentary accommodation onboard. This option
is strongly recommended and we expect most passengers to take advantage
of such availability, thus giving us the advantage of taking an earlier
start to the day, while you may choose to sleep in.
Departure
Day:
Expedition members board the vessel
in Port Lincoln and we depart by 8.30am. This departure time allows
people to fly in from Adelaide that same morning to make the tour.
We travel out through the sheltered gulf waters and islands of the
Western Spencer's Gulf and the Thorny Passage, and then out into
the clear Southern Ocean. Newly arrived passengers can then settle
into their cabins, unpack and familiarize themselves with the vessel.
We are on location by lunchtime.
On location:
Once on location we start chumming, have lunch and watch out for
sharks. We start cage diving down to the bottom below or in the
surface cages, and when conditions allow we also offer island excursions.
After a test dive to orientate new divers with the shark cage divers
are encouraged to enter and exit the cages at their leisure.
There is plenty of time just to relax or get involved
in our research programs, or just enjoy the shark action topside.
Activities revolve around the shark activity, the shore parties,
mealtimes and special talks. After dinner and our special talks,
the nights are free to stargaze, view the days video and picture
taking, and telling stories. We generally stay on location during
the day, usually moving location only during the night to give us
maximum productivity.
On the longer 6-9 day dates, we transfer passengers
doing the shorter Splits Trip overnight in Port Lincoln every 3-4
days. Here we spend the night back in the Port Lincoln Marina, allowing
passengers to stretch their legs and drop into the Marina Hotel,
and say farewell to any passengers departing.
Last Day:
Arrival back in Port Lincoln: After a full day on location we depart
around 5pm for the return journey back to Port Lincoln, arriving
to our homeport around 10pm on this final day. Passengers may stay
onboard the vessel this night and depart before 8am the following
day, or may pre-arrange alternative accommodation in Port Lincoln
with a late night entry. No flights from Port Lincoln can be met
until the following day.
